Oil Change Advice: Are You an Extreme Driver?

(Posted on Feb 7, 2017 at 06:00AM by Michelle Bogle)
automotive service centre new west bcHave you ever wondered what the term “extreme driver” means? Does it make you think of stunt car drivers or race track enthusiasts with a need for speed?

While that may be true, the term extreme driver actually refers to someone who drives in punishing conditions, like high-dust areas or sizzling climates. Both can do a number on your vehicle and, as a result, increase the need for more frequent oil changes.
Here are four classic extreme driver profiles – can you relate to any?
The Stop-and-Go Commuter
Does your daily drive involve a series of stop signs, traffic lights or bumper-to-bumper traffic? If so, you are considered an extreme driver. In this type of condition, your engine may not have enough time to warm up, which can lead to unburned gasoline that mixes with your oil, thus reducing your engine’s protection.
The High Temperature Highway Driver
While driving at higher speeds on the highway can actually help warm and lubricate the engine, blazing hot temperatures can cause your vehicle’s oil to thin, lose additives and oxidize prematurely, thus lessening its strength.
The Dusty Road Warrior
If you live near dirt roads, in polluted environments, frequent dusty construction sites or haven’t replaced your air filter in a while, you may need more frequent oil changes. When motor oil combines with dust, it can turn into an abrasive compound that erodes metals from your system. The resulting sludge can be very damaging to your vehicle’s engine.
The Heavy Hauler
Carrying or towing heavy loads can make your engine run hotter than normal. This can lead to eroded metals, thinner oil viscosity and premature oxidation, thus lessening the performance of your oil.
If you fall into one (or even more) of the profiles listed above or have fallen behind in your vehicle’s regularly scheduled maintenance, contact our Service Department at Key West Ford today to book your next oil change.
automotive service centre vancouver bcIt doesn’t take much to knock a car or truck out of alignment – with each pothole, curb jump and uneven patch of pavement, the suspension system and steering components on your vehicle take a real hit. And, before you know it, that new ride feel that you loved so much is long gone and replaced with a drive that feels and performs very differently.
But, there’s no need to despair – fixing a vehicle’s alignment is an easy repair, especially when it's left to our automotive service experts at Key West Ford.
Here are five common warning signs to watch out for:
1. Your steering wheel is off-centered
When you are driving down a flat and level road, the emblem on your steering wheel should appear level as well. If it is skewed to the left or right (even just ever-so-slightly) that is a sure sign that your alignment is out of whack.
2. Your steering wheel doesn’t return to centre
If after a turn, you find that your steering wheel doesn’t return to centre naturally on its own, then it’s a good indication that your alignment is off.
3. Your vehicle pulls to one side or the other
If you notice your vehicle pulling to the left or right while driving on a flat road surface, it’s time to have your alignment checked and corrected. Not only will this stop your vehicle from pulling from side to side, but it will also make for a more enjoyable ride.
4. You tires show abnormal wear
Improper vehicle alignment is one of the biggest causes of abnormal tire wear and it shows itself in various ways. For example, wear on only the inside or outside edges of the tires can indicate a problem with the camber adjustment, while feathering or scalloping can indicate a problem with the toe adjustment. Either way, if your tires are showing signs of abnormal wear, it’s time to have your alignment checked.
5. Poor handling
If the steering in your car feels unstable, improper wheel alignment is likely the culprit. In most cases, this feels like your vehicle is wandering across the road or is sloppy around corners. This kind of handling is not normal and should be addressed by a professional.
Want to learn more? If your vehicle is experiencing any of the warning signs listed above, then it’s time to bring your vehicle into Key West Ford for an alignment. Our Ford-trained Technicians will perform precise computerized diagnostics to ensure that your wheels are parallel, sitting flush on the road and that your steering wheel is straight and centred.

automotive service centre ford vancouver bcBy the time you hear squealing, squeaking or grinding, brake damage has already occurred on your vehicle. This is usually caused by rotor damage, which is a key component of your braking system, including the calipers, pads and shoes. All parts work together to stop your vehicle when you put pressure on the brake – if one part is not functioning at its optimal level, your entire braking system is compromised.
To avoid this problem, it’s always recommended to have your brakes inspected at each oil change. Your Technician will ensure that your brake pads have enough material on them to ensure that your rotors don’t become damaged. Remember, as your brake pads wear, they get thinner. The front pads also wear faster than the rear brake pads by a ratio of about 2:1 since there is more load placed on the front when stopping.
During your inspection, if your Technician notices that any brake parts require replacement, they can recommend the right parts for your vehicle, including our Genuine Ford or Motorcraft brake parts. Both brands are designed with your Ford vehicle in mind for the best fit, performance and longevity. Sure, there are aftermarket parts available, but these often have a one-size-fits-all approach, which doesn’t lend itself to a long-lasting, quality part.
To learn more about the importance of regular brake inspections, as well as our extensive line-up of Genuine Ford or Motorcraft parts, please contact our Service Department today to speak with an advisor. Get Your Battery Inspected at Key West Ford

(Posted on Jan 13, 2017 at 09:00PM by Michelle Bogle)
We’ve got a question for you – when was the last time you had your vehicle’s battery inspected and/or replaced? If you can’t remember when, then you might want to continue reading on.
Battery Basics
A properly functioning battery is 100% necessary for the safe operation of your car or truck. Not only does it supply power to the starter and ignition, but it also provides extra power when your vehicle’s load requirements exceed the supply from the charging system. Your battery is also a voltage stabilizer for the electrical system of your vehicle. Put simply, it is a very, very important component of your Ford.
Battery Life Span & Warning Signs
Generally, batteries begin to fail around the three-year point. And, when that does happen, you’ll know, thanks to these key warning signs:
• Hard starting, slow cranking
• Rotten eggs smell
• History of charging or electrical system concerns
• Battery cables in poor condition
• Bulging or deformed battery container
• Loose battery terminals
• Leaking battery fluid

Nothing is more unnerving than driving along the highway and noticing a yellow light illuminate on the dash, telling you to check your engine. And, for most vehicle owners, many have little idea as to what this notification means – is it a simple problem like a loose gas cap or something more serious, like a misfiring engine? For the average person with general automotive knowledge, we can understand the confusion.
To know if you need to pull over or call for a tow, there are some signs to keep in mind when assessing why your vehicle’s check engine light might be on. Signs like the absence of smoke or strange smells likely point to a non-urgent issue, while others, such as the car not starting or a severe loss in power, can be signs of immediate problems.
Here’s a handy infographic from our friends over at Be Car Care Aware with the warning indicators to look for when your car or truck’s check engine light comes on:
automotive service for vehicles vancouver bc
As a rule of thumb, it’s always a good idea to bring your vehicle in for service when the check engine light comes on. If you ignore the warning, you risk damaging expensive components on your vehicle or suffering from other issues, like poor fuel economy.

Keeping up with your Ford's regular scheduled maintenance is another way to avoid engine troubles. Your Owner's Guide contains complete details, including recommended intervals for key maintenance and inspection items.

Snow, ice, freezing temperatures – these are just a few words to describe the weather across the Lower Mainland this winter. Which begs the question: have you installed winter tires on your Ford car or truck? If your answer is ‘no’, then you might want to consider purchasing a set for your vehicle. After all, winter tires offer a number of benefits beyond just the safety of you and your automotive.
Here are four reasons why you should consider installing winter tires on your vehicle:
Increased performance at 7 degrees Celsius
As the temperature drops, this can lead to poor traction and control on the roads, especially below 7 degrees Celsius. This is also the temperature where winter tires really kick into performance, thanks to the special rubber compounds that are designed to improve surface grip in every type of road condition, including ice and snow.
Shortened stopping distances
Better surface grip and traction translates to shortened stopping distances by as much as 25% when your vehicle is equipped with winter tires and they can improve collision avoidance by 38%. Watch here for more:
Fuel savings
According to a report by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF), installing winter tires on your vehicle during the colder season will save you as much as 5% in fuel costs.
Peace of mind
Having winter tires installed on your vehicle will provide you with the peace of mind of knowing that you are doing your part in keeping our roads safe. Plus, you'll have the confidence you need to handle whatever Mother Nature throws at you.
If you think you might benefit from installing winter tires on your Ford car or truck, our Service Advisors can help you select the best set to suit your driving habits and budget. To book an appointment with our Service Department, contact us at Key West Ford today.

filter change service vancouver bcThe cabin air filter plays an important role in the interior of your vehicle by cleaning the air that comes through the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. It catches dust, pollen and other airborne materials that can make riding in a car unpleasant, particularly if you have allergies or respiratory issues.
That’s why it’s important to change your vehicle’s cabin air filter as part of your regular maintenance – about every 20,000 - 24,000 km, depending on your driving habits and what’s listed in your Owner’s Guide. And, it’s an easy maintenance item to complete in your own driveway – no service appointment required.
Here’s how:
1. Check your Owner’s Guide to find out what type of air filter you need and its location (most are found in the glove box).
2. Buy the right filter for your car or truck.

Tip: Did you know that Motorcraft cabin air filters are designed specifically for your Ford and that they remove microscopic particles as small as three microns, which is less than a tenth of the size of a human
3. Access the cabin air filter, then pop it out by depressing the inner plastic tabs.
4. Insert the new filter, following the directions on the packaging.
5. Dispose of the old filter.
6. Note the date and odometer reading of the newly installed filter so you know when it needs to be changed in the future.
That’s it – super easy!
But, of course, if you’d rather leave this job to the pros, that’s not a problem. Simply contact our Service Department at Key West Ford to book your next maintenance appointment and our Technicians will replace your cabin air filter for you using Motorcraft parts.
