automotive service centre vancouver bcAs a Ford car or truck owner, one of the best things you can do for your vehicle is keeping up with its regular maintenance. Not only will your automotive run better and be more reliable, but it can also improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, which will lower your monthly fuel costs each time you visits the pumps.

Don’t believe us? Here are some stats from the U.S. Department of Energy, explaining just how much you can reduce your vehicle’s fuel consumption through regular servicing:

Completing regular maintenance according to your manufacturer’s recommended schedule can reduce your fuel consumption by up to 4%

Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can reduce your fuel consumption by up to 40%

Keeping your tires properly inflated can reduce your fuel consumption by up to 3%

Using your manufacturer’s recommended oil can reduce your fuel consumption by up to 2%

It’s important to note that regular maintenance is not only good for your pocketbook, but the environment too, as it removes harmful exhaust emissions from the air we breathe. Something to keep in mind this Earth Day!

6 Car Care Tips to Extend the Life of Your Ford

Tags:
(Posted on Apr 13, 2017 at 06:00AM by Michelle Bogle)
automotive service centre in vancouver bcYour vehicle works hard for you as it battles congested roads, extreme hot and cold conditions, wear and tear, and regular use. If you don’t keep up with its ongoing maintenance, your car or truck won’t be able to keep up with you when you need it most.

Thankfully, there are some easy car care tips that you can follow to extend the life of your Ford. Here are six to start implementing today:

1. Follow your vehicle’s recommended maintenance schedule for regular engine oil and filter replacements. Your vehicle will run more efficiently if you keep up with these service items.

2. Replace your timing belt every 100,000 km or as outlined in your Owner’s Guide to avoid failure.

3. Rotate, balance and align your tires every 10,000 km to preserve their tread. If not, you’ll have to pay for expensive replacements more often, which can be avoided with proper care.

4. If you are typically a city driver in stop-and-go traffic, make time for an extended highway drive at least once a month. This will heat up your engine and burn off any built-up condensation, which can harm the oil and internal parts of your engine.

5. This goes without saying – by washing and waxing your vehicle on a regular basis, it will not only maintain the good looks of your car or truck, but it will also prevent rust from occurring. If you notice any paint chips or dings, have those repaired to keep your Ford looking great.

6. Even in the dead of winter or the high heat of summer, run your vehicle’s air conditioning and heating systems for about five minutes each month. This will keep your HVAC system well lubricated and can help prevent failure.

Remember: Looking after your vehicle doesn’t just extend its life, but it can also help your resale or trade-in value too. To give your Ford the attention that it deserves, book your next maintenance appointment with our Service Department at Key West Ford. Our factory-trained Technicians have the knowledge, skills and quality parts to keep your vehicle in tip-top condition.

Ford Service: 4 Signs Your Vehicle’s Wheel Alignment is Out of Whack

Tags:
(Posted on Apr 10, 2017 at 09:14AM by Michelle Bogle)
ford service experts vancouver bcNo matter the age, make or model of the car or truck you drive, one thing is certain: if your vehicle’s wheel alignment is out of whack, you will never enjoy a smooth ride. Rather, you’ll be pulled to the left or the right of the road, always needing to course-correct as you go, and replace your tires more frequently due to premature wear.

Sounds like the pits, right? We have to agree – which is why you should have your Ford’s wheel alignment checked at regularly scheduled intervals, as outlined in your Owner's Guide. If not, you might experience these warning signs

Vehicle Pull
Usually, the first thing a driver notices when their wheel alignment is out of whack is steering pull. An easy way to test for this is to drive on a smooth, straight section of road. If the vehicle pulls to one side despite the flat surface, your alignment made need correcting.

Uneven Tire Wear
Another sign of an alignment issue is uneven tire wear, which leads to premature replacement. To check for uneven wear, simply crank your steering wheel so that you can easily view the tread faces of the front wheels. If they show more wear on one side versus the other, you should schedule an appointment for a wheel alignment.

Crooked Steering Wheel
If you’re driving on a flat road surface, your steering wheel should sit close to centred and straight. The emblem should also appear level. If not, it’s time to have an alignment check.

Poor Drivability
If the steering in your car or truck feels loose or unstable, or is sloppy as you take corners, this can point to a dangerous alignment issue. This is not a warning sign to ignore, but one to deal with right away, as your safety could be in jeopardy.

In summary, incorrect wheel alignment can create a host of drivability and premature wear problems, so it’s best to get your vehicle inspected as soon as any warning signs show themselves. Oftentimes, the cost of the alignment pays for itself by avoiding expensive tire replacements from uneven wear.

tire inspections in vancouver bcSpring is officially here in New Westminster, B.C. If you have winter tires installed on your vehicle, you might be wondering: “Is it time to switch to my all-season or summer tires?”

Great question.

There are a few things to consider before booking your appointment at our Service Department for a tire changeover. Here are three factors that can influence your timing:

Winter tire laws
In B.C., drivers must obey winter tire and chain signs throughout the province from October 1 to March 31. If you plan to drive in any areas where these signs are posted, you’ll want to book your spring tire changeover April 1st or later.

Weather conditions
It's safe to remove your winter tires once the average daily high is above 7 degrees Celsius, and the risk of snow or frost has passed. Keep an eye on the averages in your area and look at the long-range forecast before switching.

Proper storage
Before you book your changeover appointment, be sure that you have a proper place to store your tires so that they don’t get damaged or stolen. If you don’t have space to store your tires at home, ask your Service Advisor about our tire storage options. Or, if you do have space in your garage or basement, always stack your tires no more than four high and never hang them – that will damage the bead. You’ll also want to store them in a cool, dry place and in proper storage bags to protect the rubber.

Remember: Winter tires are supposed to last several seasons. But, prolonged use in warm conditions (above 7 degrees Celsius) will cause premature wear, which means that you’ll need to replace your winter tires sooner. If you are within the legal requirements of the province, expecting decent weather conditions and have a proper place to store your tires, then it’s best to make the switch to your all-season or summer tires.

Are you ready for a change? If so, contact Key West Ford today to book your spring tire changeover appointment.
automotive service centre vancouver bcAfter this year’s long and drawn out winter, your Ford car or truck is likely in need of some TLC. If so, you’ve come to the right place! At Key West Ford, we can get your vehicle in shape for spring with these car care tips:

Remove winter tires
If your vehicle is equipped with winter tires, call our Service Department to book a spring tire changeover appointment. If you don’t have winter tires, it’s still a good idea to have your tires rotated or replaced.

Check your brakes
If you notice your brakes are squealing or screeching, or if your stopping distances are longer than usual, your vehicle might be due for a brake service. Our Ford-trained Technicians can inspect, repair and/or replace any worn brake parts so that you are safe on the road this spring.

Change the oil and top up fluids
When you are having your vehicle in for a tire changeover or rotation, have an oil change completed as well. This will ensure that your vehicle is operating in tip-top condition for the spring and summer months. Don’t forget to also top up your fluids, like windshield washer fluid, anti-freeze, power steering and transmission fluids.

Check your belts and hoses
To ensure that your vehicle’s systems are working as they should, you’ll want to inspect the belts and hoses for any damage or leaks. A slipped belt or leaky hose could affect the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and braking system of your car or truck.

Inspect the alternator
Make sure that the charging system on your vehicle is working well by inspecting and testing the alternator.

Have your battery tested
Winter can wreak havoc on your vehicle’s battery. Be sure to have it tested and inspected to ensure that it is still holding a strong charge.

Give it an exterior cleaning
Nothing says spring like a freshly washed vehicle! This is a great way to wash away corrosive road salt and other debris, which can cause your car or truck to rust. Be sure to also pay attention to the underbody of your vehicle, as well as under the hood.

Clean the interior
Road salt can also damage the inside of your vehicle, as it gets tracked inside from your boots. Give the interior of your vehicle a thorough vacuuming and wipe down any surfaces. This is also an ideal time to clean and store your winter mats and apply any protectant to the dashboard, steering wheel and seats to prevent sun damage or cracking of any vinyl or leather surfaces.

Wiper Blades
Last, but not least, are your wiper blades. These should be replaced every six months or if you notice streaking, banding, chattering or an oily haze on your windshield.

Is your vehicle in need of some TLC this spring? If so, contact our Service Department today to book your maintenance appointment. Our Ford experts will get your car or truck in tip-top shape so you are ready to tackle whatever the spring season throws your way!

First Day of Spring: Change Your Wiper Blades

Tags:
(Posted on Mar 20, 2017 at 08:59AM by Michelle Bogle)
ford automotive service centre vancouver bcLadies and gentlemen – the long awaited first day of spring is finally here! And, with this glorious milestone is a reminder to change the wiper blades on your Ford car or truck.

Just like tires, wiper blades are manufactured out of rubber, which can deteriorate over time, dry out or even create splits or cracks. If this happens, your wiper blades can’t function properly, which means that your visibility and safety on the roads is compromised. After the harsh winter that we just had, new wiper blades are essential.

Tip: Aside from the changing of the seasons, the best way to know if your wiper blades are due for replacement is to look and listen for these warning signs:

Chattering or squeaking
Banding or streaking
Beading of fine water droplets
Haze or oily build up
Cracked, pitted, scarred, discoloured or hard rubber
Bent or damaged wiper frame
Yellow wear indicator

If you are experiencing any of these issues, then it’s time for a swap.

Not sure what kind of wiper blades to install on your Ford car or truck? Then stop into our Service Department to speak with an advisor. With a range of Motorcraft blades to choose from, we can recommend and install the right type of windshield wipers for your vehicle to ensure the best fit and performance.

Spark Plugs: When Should I Have Them Replaced?

Tags:
(Posted on Mar 14, 2017 at 06:00AM by Michelle Bogle)
ford automotive service centre vancouver bcEver wonder what spark plugs do – specifically, what their job is within your vehicle? You’re not alone. Many drivers are unaware of this small, but essential automotive part.

Simply put, a spark plug is a device in the engine that produces electric sparks to start the ignition. Over time, they can wear out and require replacement. If that’s the case, you may notice one or all of these warning signs:

Your car won’t start
If your spark plugs are unable to produce an electric spark to start the ignition, your car won’t be able to start – simple as that. So, if your battery is fine and you have a full tank of gas in your vehicle, you may want to have one of our Technicians inspect your spark plugs. It's an inexpensive fix.

Your engine misfires
If your vehicle’s engine misfires, it could mean that a spark plug wire or the tip of the spark plug that connects to the wire are damaged. This is characterized by intermittent stumbling or sputtering sounds from the engine. If the engine is left to misfire, exhaust emissions will increase, engine power will decrease and fuel efficiency will drop. Don’t ignore this problem – bring your Ford to our Service Department for an inspection.

Your car’s fuel economy has declined
Speaking of poor fuel efficiency, did you know that a faulty spark plug can cause your vehicle’s fuel economy to drop as much as 30 percent? That adds up to a lot of extra trips to the gas station. Stop the bleed by having the spark plugs replaced on your vehicle. Your wallet will thank you!

Your car is slow to accelerate
A spark plug is made of materials that work together to produce a spark hot enough to ignite the air-fuel mixture. When those materials wear out, the effectiveness of the spark plug is reduced, which can significantly decrease the acceleration of your vehicle. If you notice that your car is running sluggishly or does not accelerate as quickly as it used to, it may be attributed to a spark plug that needs replacing.

How Often Should I Change My Brake Fluid?

Tags:
(Posted on Mar 11, 2017 at 02:34PM by Michelle Bogle)
ford automotive service centre vancouver bcBrake fluid is an important part of a vehicle’s braking system and needs to be replaced according to your Owner’s Guide.

It is contained within a sealed system and can survive years untouched, but moisture from the surrounding air can seep through hoses and other parts of the brake system. Over time, this moisture can lower the boiling point of the fluid, thus diminishing a vehicle’s stopping ability. Moisture can also cause internal corrosion in the brake lines, calipers, the master cylinder and other components.

And, while there is a cost associated with flushing and replacing brake fluid, one thing is certain: replacing rusted brake lines and other parts is far more expensive. By keeping up with your Ford’s scheduled maintenance, you can potentially avoid a costly repair down the road.

As a rule of thumb, it's wise to have the brake fluid inspected every few years. If it’s been longer than that, your vehicle is clearly overdue for this important maintenance items.

Rather than risk your stopping ability, contact us today to book an appointment in our Service Department. Our team of Ford-trained Technicians will ensure that your braking system is functioning at its best for your safety and peace of mind.
automotive cooling system service vancouver bcIt’s safe to say that we’ve had our fair share of ice, cold and snow this winter in New Westminster, B.C. And, you must admit, there’s nothing worse than climbing into a cold vehicle each morning, making for a frosty drive to work or just around town.

If you’ve noticed that it takes a long time for your vehicle’s cabin to warm up or your windows to de-fog, you might have an issue with your heater core.

This component is an important part of your car or truck’s cooling system and looks like a small radiator. Its job is to ensure the proper function of your heater and defroster.

Here are five warning signs of a failing heater core to watch out for:

Foggy windows
The most common sign of a heater core issue is when the inside of your vehicle fogs up with condensation. This usually means that there’s a leak in the system, which causes hot coolant vapours to fill the cabin.

Fruity odour
When a heater core breaks down, it's often accompanied by a sweet, fruity smell – like melons. This is a sure sign that your radiator fluid is leaking.

Using more coolant than normal
If your vehicle suddenly requires more coolant than normal, check the passenger side floor for moisture. This is a common spot for coolant leaks to collect.

Chilly cabin
A lack of heat in your vehicle’s cabin could be an issue with your blower, but it could also point to a more serious problem with your heater core, like a hole that’s allowing warm air to escape the system before it reaches your cabin.

Overheating
If your vehicle overheats, it’s best to have it inspected by a Ford-trained Technician, as there is likely a serious issue with the cooling system, including the heater core. This is not something to be messed with – unaddressed extreme heat will lead to a breakdown and possible component damage.

It’s important to note that you might experience only a few of these issues or you might experience them all. It ultimately depends on your vehicle, its age and overall condition.

If you think your heater core isn’t functioning as it should or is due for a replacement, please contact our Service Department at Key West Ford in New Westminster, B.C. Our Ford-trained Technicians have the expertise, knowledgeable and Ford-approved parts to keep your vehicle running at its best.
