Key West Ford’s sales team ( my main contact Peter Olson) were a pleasure to deal with when I recently went looking to replace my 8 year old F150 pick up. Peter was very thorough in showing and explaining the dealerships new and pre owned vehicles as well as what new vehicles were available at other lower mainland dealers. I left the dealership to think about my options returning a few days later and purchased a great 1 year old ,well optioned pick up , exactly what I was looking for ! I’d like to thank Peter for answering all my questions on comparisons between different models, options, new or pre- owned, I’d also like to thank Michelle for making the “ paper work “ very easy to get through.

For most B.C. drivers, air conditioning is a necessity, not a luxury. As the weather starts to sizzle, a cool vehicle interior is an absolute must when ensuring a comfortable driving experience.

But, over time, A/C systems can lose their cool and blow warm or hot air inside the cabin. That’s usually a sign of low refrigerant, a leak in the climate system components, a faulty cooling compressor, a dirty cabin air filter or something worse.

The best way to avoid these troubles is by having your Ford’s A/C system inspected yearly – preferably before summer’s arrival. Watch here for more:

If your Ford car or truck is giving you the sweats, book an appointment with our Service Department for a complete A/C inspection. If we find that certain components need to be replaced to ensure optimal performance of your car’s cooling system, our Ford Service Experts can handle those for you on the spot, so that you can get back on the road again – quickly and comfortably.

Top 5 Summer Car Care Maintenance Tips for Ford Owners

ford parts and service new westminster bcAs the mercury climbs, the hot temps of summer can amplify the effects of daily driving on your Ford car or truck. Rather than risk a heat-related breakdown or an unexpected repair, here are some summer car care tips to remember:

Keep Your Engine Cool
High outdoor temperatures can cause your engine to overheat, so it’s no wonder that overheated motors are the main cause of summer breakdowns. That’s why it’s key to watch your Ford’s coolant levels and to top them up as needed.

Get Your A/C Inspected
While it’s essential to keep your engine cool, it’s also important to keep the interior of your vehicle at a comfortable temperature. Rather than risk your A/C failing on the hottest day of summer, get it inspected in late spring to ensure that it’s in top working condition for the warmer months.

Replace Your Windshield Wipers
Your windshield wipers should be replaced every six months – usually at the beginning of winter and the beginning of summer. If you skip this easy and inexpensive maintenance item, you severely decrease your visibility on the roads, which is also a safety concern. Rather, swap out your blades for a fresh set and top up your washer fluid as well – it takes just a few minutes of your time!

Up Your Oil Change Frequency
If you have long road trips on the summer bucket list, plans to tow a boat or trailer, or know that you’ll be taking shorter car rides in greater frequency, you need to up your oil change frequency according to your vehicle’s elevated maintenance schedule. Not sure what that looks like? Our Service Advisors can advise you of the preferred intervals.

Check Your Tire Pressure
As temperatures rise, your tires are at a greater risk for a blowout. This makes monitoring pressure levels critical in the summer months. Most Fords are equipped with TPMS, which monitors the pressure for you, but it’s also smart to manually check your tire pressure once a month using a traditional tire gauge.

Prevent Damaging Your Ford with Scheduled Maintenance

ford service vancouver bcSpending a little on regular maintenance can go a long way towards preventing major damage to your vehicle. But, if you don't keep up with this maintenance, you risk damaging important vehicle components and paying for costly repairs:

Engine Failure/Damage
Replacing your engine comes with an expensive price tag and can be caused by several things, like a broken timing belt, failed fuel or water pump, broken rod, broken alternator, damaged valve, etc. Regularly scheduled maintenance can ward off these issues, saving you a bundle in engine replacement costs.

Failed Transmission
Wear and tear on a transmission can happen if you have extreme driving habits, tow excessive loads or don't keep up with regular transmission fluid maintenance. Like the engine, a failed transmission is an expensive fix – one that could be avoided with regular service.

Catalytic Converter Damage
Your catalytic converter is the component of your exhaust system that reduces the amount of harmful pollutants in your exhaust. If it fails, it’s likely because you’ve ignored another problem under your hood, like a poorly tuned engine, misfiring spark plugs or a faulty oxygen sensor.

Rotor/Drum Damage
Over time, your brake pads and shoes wear out from friction and need to be replaced. It’s important to avoid getting to the metal-to-metal point, which can severely damage your rotors or drums and lead to an expensive repair bill.

Don't leave your Ford's maintenance until it's too late! To book your next service appointment, please contact our dealership to speak with an advisor.

Extend the Life of Your Ford with Regular Maintenance

Tags:
(Posted on May 7, 2017 at 06:00AM by Michelle Bogle)
automotive maintenance provider vancouver bcWhether you drive an older Ford Mustang or a newer F-150 that’s still under warranty, regularly scheduled maintenance is key to extending the life of your vehicle. Over time, components begin to wear, which can lead to larger issues or repairs. The best way to avoid this is by inspecting your Ford on an on-going basis.

Here are four key areas to pay attention to:

Inspect your tires
Uneven wear or unbalanced tires can stress the suspension on your car or truck. To avoid this, have your tires rotated on a regular basis and inspect the alignment too. Not only will this extend the life of your tires, but your vehicle as a whole.

Check your fluids
The fluids in your Ford lubricate critical parts and systems, such as your brakes, power steering and transmission. By replacing contaminated fluids and ensuring correct levels, these parts and systems can work more efficiently, thus extending the life of your vehicle.

Replace your timing belt
The timing belt in your vehicle plays an important role – it prevents the pistons and valves from colliding. Over time, this can cause the belt to weaken, wear and eventually break, which can cause serious damage to your engine. To avoid this costly repair, be sure to replace the timing belt according to the schedule in your Owner’s Guide.

Check your suspension
Worn shocks and struts are responsible for a rougher ride, decreased vehicle control and increased stopping distances. By replacing these key parts before they are completely worn out, you not only improve the stability and ride control of your vehicle, but you also have the ability to extend the life of your car or truck.

Remember: if you are too busy and don’t have the know-how to regularly check these maintenance items yourself, our Service Experts at Key West Ford in New Westminster, B.C. can help. Simply call us to book an appointment and we’ll handle the rest.

Fuel Saving Vehicle Maintenance in New Westminster, B.C.

Tags:
(Posted on May 2, 2017 at 12:02PM by Michelle Bogle)
ford service new westminster bcIf you have concerns about your vehicle’s fuel economy or wonder why you are having to frequent the gas station more often, your Ford car or truck might be overdue for some regular maintenance. Not only will this get your vehicle operating in tip-top shape, but you should also notice a decrease in your monthly gas costs too.

Not sure where to start? Here are 10 practical tips from Be Car Care Aware to help you improve your vehicle’s fuel economy while saving you money at the pumps:

1. Check your tires for correct pressure
Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance, thus forcing your engine to work harder and burn more expensive fuel.

2. Install the right tires on your vehicle
By installing the wrong type or size of tire, you increase your vehicle’s fuel consumption by changing the recommended rolling resistance of your car or truck.

3. Use the prescribed grade of motor oil
Your Owner’s Guide specifies the right type of motor oil to use in your vehicle, including the recommended grade and formulation. If you don’t follow these guidelines, you will experience a decrease in your fuel economy.

4. Have your engine tuned
Regular tune-ups according to your vehicle's maintenance schedule can improve your gas mileage by up to 4 percent.

5. Replace your oxygen sensor
Fresh oxygen sensors can improve fuel economy by as much as 10 to 15 percent and can save you an average of $100 per year on gas by ensuring optimal engine performance.

6. Inspect your battery
Corroded battery cables cause your alternator to work harder and burn more fuel.

7. Choose the right octane
For the best performance, always choose the recommended octane of gas for your specific vehicle. If premium gas is required, don’t cheap out for anything less.

8. Replace your air filters
Filters prevent contamination from harming the important systems in your vehicle. By replacing these at the recommended intervals, you can save up to 10 percent on fuel.

9. Check the gas cap
A missing or cracked gas cap will allow gasoline vapours to escape from your tank.

10. Have your suspension and chassis inspected
A misaligned or damaged suspension can create drag, which will increase your vehicle’s fuel consumption.

Cabin Air Filter Replacements in New Westminster, B.C.

filter replacements in vancouver bcIf you’ve fallen victim to a vehicle with stale air, a dusty interior or a less-than-fresh odour, it might be time to replace the cabin air filter in your Ford car or truck. In most vehicles, this filter is located behind the glove box and can easily be swapped out on your own or by a Technician.

If you want to tackle this yourself, follow these six easy steps:

1. Refer to your Ford Owner’s Guide, which shows the location and type of filter used in your vehicle.

2. Purchase the right Motorcraft cabin air filter for your vehicle, which is available from our Parts Department.

3. Access the cabin air filter and pop out the old filter by pushing on the inner plastic tabs.

4. Following the instructions on the package, insert the new filter and discard the old one.

5. Note in your Owner’s Guide the date and odometer reading of your new cabin air filter.

6. Repeat again in 35,000 to 50,000 kilometres to ensure that you always have clean air cycling throughout your vehicle.

Shock and Strut Replacements in New Westminster, B.C.

Tags:
(Posted on Apr 24, 2017 at 12:57PM by Michelle Bogle)
shock and strut replacements in vancouver bcThere are certain seasons that are extremely hard on your vehicle’s suspension, like the cold, rough terrain of winter and the pothole-laden roads of spring. As you get closer to the summer months, you might find your vehicle making strange noises or handling poorly on the roads – two signs that your shocks and struts might be due for replacement.

Here’s what can happen if you ignore these important warning signs:

Decreased braking ability
When your shocks or struts are due for replacement, your vehicle will bounce a lot more, especially over bumps, making it harder for the vehicle to stop. It can also cause your car or truck to nose-dive, which can increase your stopping distance due to a decrease in traction. Both scenarios compromise your safety on the roads, which is not okay.

Reduced control
Body roll while cornering is a symptom of damaged shocks and struts, which is characterized by a greater degree of tilt as you turn your vehicle. Not only is this unsafe, but it makes for a ride quality that’s more reminiscent of a rollercoaster.

Rough ride
Speaking of poor ride quality, a bounce test can tell you if your shocks and struts need replacing. To do so, push down on the front and rear ends of your car; if it moves up and down more than once or twice, you need to get your suspension checked.

Worn tires
A hallmark of worn shocks and struts are tires that wear out faster due to cupping. Cupping happens when your car bounces up and down on the roads, leaving indented scuff marks on the tires, which shortens their life span.

Increased hydroplaning
Speaking of tires, worn suspension parts can affect the way your vehicle makes contact with the road, especially when they are wet. If you find yourself hydroplaning or skidding frequently, your shocks or struts could be in need of extra TLC.

Don’t settle for a bumpy ride! At Key West Ford, our Ford-trained Technicians will inspect your vehicle’s suspension parts to ensure proper performance. To learn more, contact our Service Department today to book your next maintenance appointment.
