brake maintenance and repairs in vancouver bcYou're cruising down the highway at a nice clip when, all of a sudden, a sea of red lights appears in front of you. As you desperately try to brake, your senses are awakened by the sounds of screeching and grinding; your foot starts to vibrate as you apply pressure to the pedal. You pull off on to the shoulder absolutely shaken. That was a close call.
Scary, right? Well, take it from us: if your brakes are trying to tell you something, you need to pay attention. Screeching, grinding and vibration are warning signs that your braking system needs to be inspected. Or if you notice your Ford is pulling or grabbing when slowing, or you need to apply extreme pressure before the system engages, your vehicle is definitely due for a service.
And keep in mind, even the most expertly engineered automobiles will need to have their brakes replaced because they are a normal wear item that deteriorates with use. Factors that can influence brake wear include your driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type and the quality of the brake lining material. You also want to be sure that you avoid letting your brakes get to the "metal-on-metal" point, as this could lead to expensive rotor or drum replacements down the road.
At Key West Ford, we make staying on top of your maintenance easy. Our factory-trained Technicians use precise diagnostic equipment to ensure that your brakes are responsive and ready to stop when you need them to. We'll also record measurements of your brake pads and shoes, so you can plan for any upcoming repairs. If you do require a replacement, we'll recommend the right parts for your vehicle so it can be fixed right the first time. That's our promise to you.

battery maintenance in vancouver bcThe mercury is falling and so is the snow. Your local weather forecaster is calling for yet another cold alert across the Lower Mainland. As you dig out your toque, mitts, and other gear, you resent Mother Nature for this unwanted cold snap. Alas, life goes on; you head to your vehicle only to hear “crank, crank, clunk” as you turn the key in the ignition. Your battery is dead. Wonderful…
This is no way to start your workday. But, sometimes motorists are faced with this harsh reality because they simply do not take care of their vehicle’s battery. And in the winter, it’s absolutely essential to properly maintain this important component, especially since engines are harder to turn in the cold.
Don’t get stranded this winter! Follow these tips to achieve optimal battery performance in your Ford all year long:
Inspect it
Over time, batteries age. To ensure your battery is operating at peak efficiency, get in the habit of inspecting it regularly to look for signs of wear or corrosion that could cause it to fail.
Clean it
If you do notice corrosion on the battery or cable connections, pour baking soda and water on the area to scrub it off. Make sure you disconnect the cables first.
Insulate it
If you are expecting a cold snap, buy an insulator to wrap around the battery to add an extra layer of protection and warmth.
Test it
If you suspect your battery might be past its prime, bring your vehicle to Key West Ford. Our Technicians can inspect and test it for you and recommend a replacement, should it be required.

ford vehicle maintenance in bcFor the average motorist, they may not know anything about their fuel pump (or that their Ford is even equipped with one) until it breaks down. But, a fuel pump plays an important role – it injects gas into the engine so that a car can run. If this part is faulty or malfunctioning, you won’t get very far.
To avoid an unexpected breakdown, here are some warning signs to watch out for:
Engine Sputters
If your fuel pump is unable to inject a consistent stream of gas, the engine will sputter at high speeds.
If you find your vehicle coasting at a consistent speed, then suddenly surging forward without depressing the gas pedal, this could be a sign of irregular resistance within the fuel pump’s motor.
High Temperature
Just like we spike a fever when sick, a faulty fuel pump will often signal an issue by raising the temperature gauge to a higher heat, which can cause a vehicle to stall.
Loss of Power
Climbing hills or heavy payloads can put a strain on a vehicle. If your fuel pump is deteriorating, it will have a difficult time supplying gas to the engine, which can lead to a breakdown.
Bad Fuel Economy
If your Ford becomes a “fuel hog”, it could mean that your pump’s relief valve is faulty, causing more gas to unnecessarily flow into the engine.
Car Won’t Start
If you turn the ignition and hear the engine crank and rev, but never catch, this could be caused by low pressure in the gas line from a faulting fuel pump.
If you’ve been experiencing the issues listed above, it might be time to bring your vehicle in for an inspection. To schedule a service appointment at our dealership, contact us at Key West Ford in New Westminster, B.C.

Best Winter Tire Brands in Vancouver, B.C.

(Posted on Jan 1, 2018 at 07:49AM by Michelle Bogle)
winter tires in vancouver bcWith winter in full swing, it’s important to have the proper tires installed on your Ford car or truck so that you can tackle all road conditions no matter the weather.
But, you might be thinking…
“Vancouver doesn’t get hammered with snow.”
“Do I really need winter tires for my vehicle?”
“My Ford is equipped with all-wheel drive.”
“I’ve got enough traction with my all-season tires.”
Regardless, winter tires are an important safety component on your Ford, designed to handle the cold. Rubber compounds found in all-season and summer tires stiffen up once temperatures drop below 7 degrees Celsius, resulting in poor traction and stopping abilities. The physical construction of a winter tire is also different with a special tread design and enhanced rubber compounds.
And when it comes to selecting the right cold weather tire for your vehicle, there are many brands to consider. In fact, the selection is so wide that some B.C. drivers become overwhelmed with their choices that they have a hard time deciding which manufacturer to go with.
To help narrow down your selection, here’s a list of top winter tires designed to get you through the harshest Canadian driving conditions, as compiled by
BFGoodrich Winter T/A KSI
Bridgestone Blizzak
Continental WinterContact SI
General Tire Altimax Arctic
Hankook iPike
Kumho Wintercraft WP71
Michelin X-Ice Xi3
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8
Remember, each of these winter tire options comes with their own list of benefits and advantages, as well as specifications and price points.
To ensure that you select the right winter tire brand and make for your vehicle (and in the appropriate size), be sure to contact our Service Department at Key West Ford to speak with one of our tire experts. We’ll help you find the best set to suit your driving habits and budget.
ford recalls in bcKeeping up with recall notices for your Ford car or truck is crucial, as it ensures the continuous and safe operation of your vehicle.
Typically, you’ll be notified of recalls in two ways – either you’ll receive a written notice from Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited, or you'll receive a phone call or email from the dealership that you purchased your vehicle from.
And when you do receive information regarding a recall, it’s best to act on it right away. Oftentimes, it’s to address a relatively insignificant issue, such as windshield wiper malfunction, which requires a quick service appointment. If it’s a larger repair, you might need to leave your vehicle at the dealership, but those details can be worked out when you book your appointment.
If you feel that you might be behind on recalls, it is recommended that you call your dealership and ask a Service Advisor to run your vehicle identification number (VIN) through the system.
Remember: staying up to date on your Ford's maintenance needs has its rewards, as does servicing your vehicle at Key West Ford in New Westminster, B.C. To learn more, contact us today.
There are a number of reasons why people need to store a vehicle. For some, they have a convertible or a sports car that they like to baby over the winter months, while others must leave town for work or an extended vacation.
Whatever the reason, it’s very important that you store your Ford car or truck properly, so that you don’t return to a dead battery or worse – a damaged engine, deteriorated tires or destruction by small animals and rodents.
Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Change the oil
If you are storing your vehicle for more than 30 days, you’ll want to change the oil so that contaminants don’t harm the engine.
Clean it
Bird droppings, water stains, mud and grease can damage a vehicle’s paint if left on the surface for too long. Before you store your Ford, give it a good wash and wax if you have time.
Keep it covered
An indoor garage is the best place to store your vehicle, as it will protect the car from the elements and animals, and keep it at a stable temperature.
Fill it up
Fill the tank with gas and a fuel stabilizer if you expect the car to be in storage for more than 30 days. This will prevent moisture from accumulating inside the tank and keep the seals from drying out.
Keep it running
An unattended battery will eventually lose its charge, so you’ll want to drive the vehicle periodically while in storage (about every two weeks for 15 minutes). If you’ll be away, see if a friend can help you out. This will also help your tires not form flat spots.
Skip the parking brake
While you might be tempted to engage the parking brake – don’t. If the brake pads make contact with the rotors for too long, there is a chance that they might fuse. Instead, use a tire stopper to prevent the car from rolling.
If you’re getting ready to store your vehicle for the winter, call our Service Department at Key West Ford to book a pre-storage inspection. We’ll ensure that your Ford car or truck and its components and systems are in good shape before they hibernate until spring.
windshield replacement for ford in bcIt happens to every driver at least once in their lifetime – a cracked windshield. In some cases, many car owners default to the cheapest replacement option, while others ignore the break altogether.
Both scenarios are not recommended, as a properly installed and functioning windshield is a vital safety feature on a vehicle. Not only does it protect you from road debris and weather, but it also adds strength in a crash situation and minimizes occupant ejection.
The bottom line: this is a repair where corners should not be cut. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Have a qualified Technician complete the windshield replacement
An incorrectly installed windshield could pop out in an accident, allowing the roof to cave in and crush the vehicle's occupants. Likewise, when the front airbags deploy, they exert a great deal of force on the windshield, causing the glass to blow out if not firmly glued in place.
Always choose an Original Equipment replacement windshield
While an OE windshield will cost you more than an aftermarket one, you’re better off paying the slightly higher material cost. After all, OE parts are designed with your Ford in mind and engineered for the best quality, fit and durability.
Fix rock chips as soon as they happen
If your windshield isn’t cracked, but has rock chips from road debris hitting the glass, have those defects repaired right away. Over time, rain washes dirt into the cracks, making it harder to seal. They can also grow in size and cause a larger crack if not fixed immediately.
Do you have a windshield that needs replacing? If so, contact our Service Department at Key West Ford to speak with an advisor. We can price out the repair for you and book your Ford in for an appointment, so that your windshield is replaced in time for the New Year.
