With the start of another school year right around the corner, families across New Westminster will be jumping back into their old routines of school drop-offs and pick-ups, extra-curricular activities, school events and more. And, with this most wonderful time of year also comes more wear and tear on your vehicle as you shuttle your family here, there and everywhere.
Don’t get left stranded in the back-to-school shuffle! Take some time to make sure that your vehicle is in tip-top shape before the busy fall season hits.
Here are some car care tips to consider:
Check Your Tires
Underinflated tires can lead to unsafe driving, fuel inefficiency and costly alignment issues. Before you hit the road for back-to-school shopping, inspect your tires for wear and damage, and use a pressure gauge to test for proper inflation.
Replace Your Wipers
Just like you stock up on fresh school supplies for your kids, your car deserves new wiper blades too. Did you know that your wiper blades should be replaced every 6 months? It’s true! Early fall and spring are the best times to do so.
Listen to Your Brakes
Does your car squeak or squeal when braking, or have trouble stopping within a safe distance? If so, your brakes definitely need some immediate professional attention. In fact, you might even be due for new brake pads, brake shoes, shims, slots or chamfers, depending on the issue. This isn’t a problem to ignore – after all, your family’s safety is at stake!
Detail Your Ride
Nothing is more embarrassing in the carpool line than a dusty, dirty vehicle. Before the school year hits, book your vehicle in for a thorough interior and exterior detailing. Not only will this make your vehicle look, feel and smell like new, but it will also help you and your family start the fall season off on the right foot.
At Key West Ford, we want to make sure that your vehicle is in good shape for back-to-school. Contact our Service Department today to book your next maintenance appointment.

Your steering, stability, handling, ride comfort and brakes all rely on your suspension parts to function at optimum levels. If any components are worn or require replacement, your entire ride will feel off, which can reduce your safety and control behind the wheel.
When your shocks or struts become worn down, your car bounces more as you drive, which makes it difficult for your vehicle’s braking system to work effectively. If you notice longer stopping distances or reduced braking ability, have your vehicle’s suspensive system inspected right away.
Less Control When Cornering
A worn suspension system can lead to more “body roll” when cornering. Not only does this make steering difficult, but it also lends itself to an unpleasant ride and driving experience.
If you find your vehicle is rougher or bouncier than usual, your shocks or struts might need replacing. You can test this yourself by doing a "bounce test" on the vehicle. If it moves up and down more than once or twice when you push on the front or rear end, it’s time to visit our Service Department for a thorough inspection.
Premature Tire Wear
When struts or shocks are worn out, your tires wear out faster too. If you notice “cupping” on your tread, which typically presents itself as a scalloped wear pattern, this is a key sign that your suspension needs repairing.
Worn shocks and struts can affect the way your wheels engage with the road, especially when they are slick. If your vehicle is sliding or hydroplaning frequently, your shocks or struts may be failing.
If you are experiencing any of the five warning signs listed above, it’s time to bring your vehicle in for service at Key West Ford. Our highly skilled Technicians will inspect and replace worn suspension parts to ensure your vehicle’s safe and smooth performance on the road.

There are a number of signs that your car needs an oil change and knowing how to spot them is an easy way to make sure that your car gets the servicing that it needs. If you fail to do so, this can lead to expensive repairs down the road, which is news that no car owner ever wants.
Loud engine sounds:
If the oil in your car is too old or deteriorated, it will cause your engine parts to rub together and create loud, unpleasant noises.
Check engine light:
If your check engine light comes on, it can mean that you are due for an oil change, or that a larger issue has arisen. The best way to find out is to have it diagnosed by a technician.
Oil looks black:
If the oil in your car looks black (think coffee coloured), then you are well overdue for an oil change. As oil ages, it collects gunk and other debris, which can clog up your engine and cause expensive repairs down the road.
Low oil level:
If your dipstick is showing that your vehicle’s oil is low, it’s time for a change. Not having enough oil in your engine can really harm your vehicle and limit its safe performance.
If you are experiencing any of these four warning signs, it’s time to get your vehicle’s oil changed. Don’t delay this any further – contact our Service Department at Key West Ford today to book your appointment.

Did you know that most car and truck batteries last only three to five years, depending on your driving habits and the climate that you live in?
Over time and use, a battery’s efficiency gradually deteriorates, thus affecting its ability to accept and hold a charge. Extreme weather conditions, like the hot heat of summer, and tough driving conditions can really wear down a battery, requiring the need for a replacement.
•History of charging or electrical system concerns
•Battery cables in poor condition
•Bulging or deformed battery container
•Loose battery terminals
•Corrosion around the terminal posts
•Leaking battery fluid
•Rotten egg odor
•Check engine or battery light is on
Trust Our Experts
At Key West Ford, our Ford-trained Technicians will test your vehicle’s battery at every service so that you won’t be inconvenienced by an unexpected breakdown. We’ll also perform a visual inspection of your battery and its connections to look for signs of wear. If you do require a replacement, we can recommend the right battery to suit your vehicle and driving habits.

It doesn’t take much to knock a car or truck out of alignment. Each pothole, curb bump and kilometer can really do a number on a vehicle’s suspension system and steering components. And, when your alignment is off, your entire ride feels different – from the way that your tires meet the road, how your hands feel on the steering wheel and how your vehicle performs.
Here are four reasons why wheel alignment is so important:
Tire Life: An unaligned suspension system will lead to uneven tire wear, thus shortening the life expectancy of your tires.
Safety: When your wheels aren’t aligned, it can cause your vehicle to pull right or left, thus limiting your control and handling.
Performance: Aligned wheels make driving much easier, more enjoyable and comfortable.
How can you tell if your wheels need aligning? Watch this video to learn more:
If your vehicle is experiencing front-end shimmying, pulling or uneven tire wear, it’s time to bring your vehicle into Key West Ford for a wheel alignment. Our Ford-trained Technicians will perform precise computerized diagnostics to ensure that your wheels are parallel, sitting flush on the road and that your steering wheel is straight and centered.

The hot, blistering heat of summer can do a real number on your Ford car or truck. It puts stress on your engine, can trigger problems with your battery and strain other key components and systems, like your air conditioning. With so many fun things to see and do in New Westminster, you need to make sure that your vehicle is properly maintained, so it can keep up with you.
Here are some warm weather auto servicing tips to help you beat the heat this summer:
Prevent battery meltdowns
Most drivers think that car battery issues are more common in the winter. Well, that’s a myth. Excessive heat is the main culprit in shortened battery life – it can evaporate the battery’s fluid, which can cause the charging system to malfunction. To avoid this issue, be sure to inspect your Ford’s battery once a month or before a long drive.
Check your coolant levels
In the warmer weather, your vehicle’s cooling system has to work extra hard to keep your engine from overheating. If it doesn’t receive regular maintenance, it will fail. That’s why it’s so important to check the coolant levels on your car and top-up or replace at recommended intervals. If the coolant isn’t replaced regularly, this can cause heat-induced corrosion and interior cracking.
Maintain proper tire pressure
High temperatures put extra stress on your tires if they are not properly inflated. Under-inflated tires pose a great safety risk since the excessive friction caused by incorrect pressure can lead to tire failure. On the other hand, over-inflation is dangerous since air expands with heat – too much expansion can lead to uneven wear or a blow-out. That’s why you should always check your tire pressure with a tire gauge to make sure that it matches what is listed in your owner’s manual.
Don’t be left stranded this summer! Contact our Service Department at Key West Ford to book your next maintenance appointment. Our experts will inspect key components on your vehicle, like your battery, fluid levels and tires, to ensure that it’s ready to handle life on the road this summer.
